This Day in History
by Haley Lardinais, Account Coordinator
July 6th, a pretty average day right? But, here are some pretty cool things that happened on this day in years past that have definitely left their mark:
- In honor of Wimbledon in the swing of it, on this day in 1957, Althea Gibson became the first African American to win the major tennis championship.
- Also in 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the very first time at the Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete in Liverpool, England. What a future they had ahead of them!
- In 1976, 81 women were inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy for the first time in Annapolis, Maryland.
- And in 1994, “Forrest Gump”, one of the most popular movies of the time opened in theaters to rave reviews and box-office success. Lead actor Tom Hanks won his second Oscar Award.
