How One Question Could Speed Up Your Site

How One Question Could Speed Up Your Site

by Charles Pobee-Mensah, Director of Digital Marketing

HTTP/2 is a standard for websites that’s faster than the old way. Most websites don’t use it yet, but eventually, they all will. The best part is, you might be able to make this switch just by asking your hosting provider about it. Let’s take a closer look.

What Is HTTP/2?

When your computer loads a website, it has to request a bunch of different files. The old way makes your computer ask for each of them separately. The new way lets your computer get more files on a single request. Since each request takes up time, cutting out requests makes the website load faster.

What’s the Advantage of HTTP/2?

Switching from the old standard (HTTP/1.1) could improve your site speed by 13%. Additionally, it will mean that you’re on the newest standard. Your website will be a bit more future proof and a little better than others since most sites aren’t on it yet.

How Do You Get Your Website On HTTP/2?

HTTP/2 is provided by your website host. In fact, you might have it already. You can’t tell if you’re on HTTP/2 by looking anywhere on your site or browser, but you can put your website URL into this online test. Just be sure to include “http://” or “https://” before the name of your website.

If you don’t have HTTP/2, now is a great time to request it from the people hosting your website. They may be able to set it up for you. Worst case scenario, you may have to change where you’re hosting your website in order to get it. However, eventually, you can expect that most, if not all, website hosts will offer it.

We’re in the process of moving all of the clients that we host to HTTP/2 so that they can expect fast load times on their websites.
