As we are powering full-force into the holiday season, the clocks are turning back. While it might be nice to get the initial “extra hour” of sleep, for some people, this time of the year is less than welcomed. Furthermore, for those that work a regular 9-5 job, this time of the year can be especially hard. When we leave for work it’s dark and before we’ve even begun our commute home, the sun has already begun setting. This lack of sunlight can leave a big impact on our mental and physical health. It will make us less happy, less productive at home and in the workplace, and more inclined to hide away in our homes.
The good news is that there are ways to combat these tendencies!
Watch your diet. A healthy way to boost your energy levels and redirect any negative or draining mindsets you might have towards the season into one that is more positive is to maintain a well-balanced diet. Eating foods that are in season and include a healthy variety of fruits and veggies is recommended.
Indulge in a hobby. For many people working in retail, the holidays are already very overwhelming and there is a lot of pressure put on those individuals. The time change doesn’t help. It’s good to take time for yourself, start a DIY project, read that book you’ve had on the shelf for months, go to the gym, or take a class at a local community center. Getting involved in something that will separate you from any negative feelings can help you recharge and stay calm during this stressful time of the year.
Switch it up. Maximize your after-work hours to the best of your ability. Eat dinner at a new time, go to bed early so you can wake up earlier, don’t watch TV right before bed. Switching up habits can give you a fresh perspective and allow for creative thinking. Save those big household chores for the weekend and try to relax after work.
Remember you’re not alone! Many people do not like this time of year with less sunlight. Take care of yourself, look out for others, and soon enough, spring will come.
